Premier League Weekend Power Shift: Palace, Brighton, Brentford Humble Giants

The Premier League delivered a seismic jolt this Saturday 27th September 2025 as three of its biggest clubs—Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, suffered bruising defeats that is reshaping the title race and intensifying scrutiny on their managers.

At Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace stunned league leaders Liverpool with a 2–1 victory that defied the numbers. Despite having just 27.9% possession and completing only 269 passes to Liverpool’s 691, Palace were the more dangerous side throughout. Ismaila Sarr opened the scoring in the ninth minute, bundling home after a chaotic corner. Federico Chiesa’s 87th-minute equaliser seemed to salvage a point for Arne Slot’s side, but Eddie Nketiah struck in the seventh minute of added time to seal a famous win. Liverpool managed 20 shots but only four on target, while Palace’s seven on-target efforts reflected their clinical edge. Alisson Becker was the standout for the Liverpool, keeping the scoreline respectable with a string of saves.

At Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s woes deepened as Brighton came from behind to win 3–1. The Blues had more possession (58.8%) and completed 450 passes with 84% accuracy, but their advantage evaporated after Trevoh Chalobah’s red card in the 62nd minute. Danny Welbeck netted twice, punishing Chelsea’s disorganized defense, and Maxim De Cuyper’s last-minute header sealed the win. Chelsea had 13 shots to Brighton’s 12, with both sides registering three on target, but Brighton’s ruthlessness in the final third made the difference. Enzo Maresca, already under pressure, was left lamenting his side’s lack of discipline—two red cards in two matches now threaten to derail their season.

Meanwhile, Manchester United was outclassed by Brentford in a 3–1 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium. Igor Thiago struck twice inside the first 20 minutes, shocking Ruben Amorim’s side. Benjamin Šeško pulled one back with his first goal since joining United, but Bruno Fernandes missed a golden opportunity to equalize—his 76th-minute penalty saved by Caoimhín Kelleher after a lengthy VAR delay. Brentford had just 43.9% possession and completed 351 passes at 76% accuracy, compared to United’s 455 passes at 81% accuracy, but they were far more efficient in attack, registering eight shots on target from ten attempts. Mathias Jensen’s late strike capped off a dominant display.

These results have significant implications for the Premier League table. Liverpool’s lead at the top is now under threat, with Palace climbing to second and narrowing the gap to just two points. Chelsea’s defeat sees them slide further down the table, and Maresca’s position looks increasingly precarious amid mounting fan frustration. Manchester United drop farther down the bottom half of the table, and questions are being asked about Amorim’s tactical setup and squad rotation.

For Arne Slot, the challenge will be to restore Liverpool’s defensive solidity and convert possession into points. Maresca must address Chelsea’s disciplinary issues and regain control of matches they’ve been dominating statistically but losing on the scoreboard. Amorim faces a different dilemma: how to inject urgency and resilience into a side that looks increasingly vulnerable under pressure.

As the dust settles, one thing is clear, this Premier League season is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable in years. With the underdogs rising and giants stumbling, the race for glory is wide open, and the pressure on the touchline is only just beginning.
